The fact Chiropractic care is becoming increasingly popular often leads people to believe it’s a relatively new practice.
Maybe something that’s been around for 20 or so years.
In reality, it’s been around for over 120 years, since 1895, when the first adjustment was given by the ‘Founder of Chiropractic’, D.D. Palmer.
Now, it goes without saying that I wasn’t there, but the supposed story goes that Palmer was approached by the janitor of a local building, who’d been declared deaf after injuring his back a few years earlier.
After his adjustment at the hands of Palmer, the janitor found his hearing restored.
Rumour has it, Palmer then took out ads in newspapers, offering to ‘heal the deaf’, with those afflicted rushing to him in their droves.
Unfortunately, he was unable to repeat the results the janitor had experienced, but it was still enough to create awareness of the link between the spine, nervous system, and the rest of the body.
And as a result, Chiropractic medicine was born.
Our understanding of how and why Chiropractic works has developed significantly in that time – taking it from one-off ‘miraculous’ healing, to documented science with millions of happy patients across the globe.
But while it’s often thought of as a treatment for lower back or neck pain, that first event highlighted its effectiveness at addressing other conditions – like migraines and headaches, joint pain, issues with sleep, anxiety, and more.
My take?

There’s still work to be done to give Chiropractic medicine the level of credibility and acknowledgement it deserves.
But it’s come a long way in the last few years alone, and I know that as we help more patients achieve transformations they didn’t realise were possible, word will continue to spread.
